The announcement that U.S. Steel is considering the sale of the iron-making side of its Granite City Works facility would mean the closure of much of the steel-processing side of the plant and the elimination of about 1,000 jobs starting in 2024.On Tuesday the company announced tentative plans to sell the two blast furnaces at the U.S. Steel-Granite City Works to SunCoke Energy Inc., which operates a facility in Granite City providing coke for operation, and the signing of a ‘non-binding letter of intent’ with the other company.
